Legal Framework for North Carolina’s Elder Protection System

The Legal Framework for North Carolina’s Elder Protection System is intended to serve as the foundation for the online North Carolina Elder Protection Network. One of the key challenges we identified in our preliminary research was that the components of the system understood their own roles within the system, but they did not necessarily understand the roles that others played. Each chapter provides a relatively high-level overview of one component. For example, Chapter 2 describes the work of adult protective services (APS). The first part of each chapter provides an overview of the work of the component and will primarily be helpful for those who work outside the component (e.g., those who are not social workers involved with APS work). The latter part of each chapter includes a “call and response” section that explores challenges faced by the component and possible options for overcoming those challenges.

The manual may be downloaded free of charge or a print version is available through UNC Press. The free download would not have been possible without funding support from the North Carolina Conference of Clerks of Superior Court, the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts, and the NC Governor's Crime Commission through PROJ012303: NCCCSC AOC Elder Abuse & Financial Exploitation 2017.
